The saying goes "Good help is often hard to find".  The ACWA consultant's directory is provided to make it that little bit easier. Before starting your search please read the following guide to selecting a suitable consultant.

Selecting a suitable aquaculture consultant

Before hiring a consultant, check their bona fides and their skills to complete the work you require undertaken.  This can be done by checking references and making other inquiries.  Remember, good advice is expensive, bad advice is very expensive, even if given free! 

Before contacting a prospective consultants it is important that you to clearly define the scope of the work (aims/objectives, specifications).  This scope of work will form a valuable starting point for negotiating a service agreement/contract.

After identifying one or more potential consultants, ask them to provide (in writing) an expression of interest in quoting for the job (in response to your requirements). Be sure to ask about details of:

• professional indemnity insurance,
• past experience in similar projects including references,
• any potential conflicts of interest; and
• last but not least, their trading terms.

A reluctance to provide any of the above details requested is not a good sign. Successful consultants will have no difficulty in providing references of people they have worked for!  Be diligent in your checks and make sure you agree on all the details in terms of the scope of the work, the outcomes sought, the timelines agreed and the costs involved. Make sure it is in writing because verbal agreements are difficult to substantiate.
