| | Tiger Prawns Interest in farming black tiger prawns began in the 1990s. By September 2004 five licences had been issued in WA for hatchery production and grow-out sites. A three-year project launched in July 2003 included hatchery production and commercial grow-out trials. When complete, this will provide a firm basis for future industry growth. The Broome Tropical Aquaculture Park has acted as a nucleus for aquaculture development in the Kimberley area, with species including black tiger prawns, South pearl oysters, barramundi and trochus all providing high-quality seed stock supplies. Tiger Prawn Research Research efforts are aimed at evaluating local black tiger prawns for aquaculture and assisting with development of the large number of potential hatchery and ‘grow-out'sites. These studies include: - Site identification for large-land based site
- Site identification on the Dampier Peninsular for marine aquaculture, including prawns.
- Predicting water temperature and salinity in prawn farming ponds, in relation to wind influence and cooler dry seasons in tropical areas.
- Pilot-scale broodstock collection, hatchery and grow-out studies, as well as environmental baseline surveys.
