Dr. Justin Welsh completed his PhD at James Cook University, during which time he worked closely with the commercial fishing, conservation and aquaculture industries in Australia and abroad. His research focused on developing innovative research and development programs to improve operational efficiencies and performance across the sectors he was involved with. During his time at James Cook University, Justin was also involved with the Centre for Macroalgal Resources and Biotechnology to support continued efforts to commercialise algae production.
After leaving Queensland, Justin took on a role as an environmental consultant with a focus on supporting WA’s aquaculture industry. In this capacity, he worked with a number of leading aquaculture organisations in WA to support their expansions, comply with environmental monitoring requirements and liaise with regulators.
Justin now works directly in the industry as General Manager for the Harvest Road Group where he oversees the group’s aquaculture businesses. Harvest Road are currently focused on shellfish production from Carnarvon to Albany but are investigating options to expand into numerous other aquaculture species. On of Justin’s focuses at Harvest Road is to continue the company’s expansion into aquaculture and position Harvest Road as industry citizen, driving positive change in WA’s aquaculture industry.
