Under Section 258 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994, the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development has regulatory powers to prescribe measures to prevent cruelty to fish, provide for their welfare, safety and health and to provide for the adoption of codes of practice relating to the care, welfare, safety and health of fish. The Department is yet however, to develop the regulations to give effect t to these powers and as a result ACWA has developed a set of animal welfare practices as a guide for the aquaculture industry.
This report was written in response to driving interest and concern from both the R.S.P.C.A and the public towards the humane treatment of aquatic animals. The industry hopes to develop recognised, acceptable and uniform practices for aquatic animal welfare with the due diligence of aquaculturists, fishermen, wholesalers, retailers and consumers.
The guidelines are available for download from the following link:Guidelines on Aquatic Animal Welfare for the Western Australian Aquaculture Industry
